The Chinese character’s lines in Pete Hoekstra’s Superbowl ad are written in the cliched style of the gramatically-challenged Asian (“Your economy get very weak”) but the actress delivers them in her own completely unaccented American voice. Presumably the makers of the ad felt that a fake Chinese accent ON TOP OF broken English would be offensive. I SUPPOSE it’s progress that in 2012 you can’t traffic in ethnic stereotypes without being self-conscious about it.
