I have decided on my favorite picture of 2010. It would be The Fighter. Some one said, “But Natasha, you haven’t seen True Grit yet.” To which I say, ‘tis no matter. The Coen Bros could never create something with so much heart. I enjoy the Brotherz C but they are a frigid lot.
Now, I recognize, that this movie stands no chance in The Best Picture category for reasons I find unjust. They are the following:
1. The Social Network should win as much as Mark Zuckerberg should be TIME’s person of the year. It’s empty and for old people about young people but ultimately really about old people. Condescending and lame. Like, this is one of those situations when some one says, “Why don’t you like the Sosh Net?” you are more than allowed to exhale cigarette smoke in their face and be like, ‘You don’t get it.’
2. Black Swan is trash that is being mistaken for art. If it came to me as a cake I would throw it in the trash.
3. Inception, which also doesn’t stand a chance, is an incredible film (even though it’s very icy! And features two actors with that weird lamprey mouth lisp: Ellen Page, JGL.)
All that to say that my hunger strike for THE FIGHTER TO WIN BEST PICTURE starts tonight.
This will overlap with my long running Dark Knight Oscar Nom hunger strike.
I just want to go on the record as saying that the Coens are among our most humane filmmakers and that their often pressurized mise-en-scène not only does not equal frigidness but in fact serves as a release chamber for moments of unparalleled emotion, compassion and heart. Thank you.
